3/4 cup shortening 2 cups flour
1 cup sugar, plus more for
1/2 teaspoon salt
coating the dough balls
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1/4 cup dark molasses 1/2
teaspoon ginger
1 egg 1 teaspoon
cinnamon
2 teaspoons baking powder
Preheat oven to 350˚F.
Combine shortening, sugar, egg and molasses. Add the spices. Combine the baking powder, the flour, and the salt and add to the molasses mixture a little at a time, until completely mixed. Roll the dough into walnut-sized balls and then roll in sugar until completely coated. Bake about 2" apart on a cookie sheet in the oven just until the cookies flatten out and the tops crack. DO NOT OVER BAKE - COOKIES WILL NOT BE AS CHEWY.
